As part of our mission to raise the bar of Chinese medicine by bringing classical theory to life in the clinic, The Association for Traditional Studies is pleased to announce the final details on observing and training at The Alternative Clinic, the association’s teaching focused, open room clinic. While seminar training is incredibly important, watching Chinese medicine in practice on real patients is critical to reaching a level of clinical efficacy. Clinical training & observation hours have been approved for CEU credit by the California Acupuncture Board and are accepted by the NCCAOM for PDAs.
Traditionally, a student would spend years assisting and interning with an experienced practitioner before going out on their own, yet today most practitioners graduate from school without any significant training under a highly skilled practitioner. Because of this gap in learning clinically focused Chinese medicine, ATS launched The Alternative Clinic in Asheville, NC. Built around Andrew Nugent-Head’s 25+ years in China and JulieAnn’s 8 years training with the last traditional doctors in Beijing, ATS offers short term clinical observation and an in depth 300 hour clinical immersion program.
Come as an Observer
Observers are students or licensed practitioners who are interested to see and understand the style of Chinese medicine taught and practiced by Andrew and JulieAnn Nugent-Head. Observers are at the clinic to observe and learn about what we call Tangible Medicine. It is an excellent way to stretch one’s understanding of clinical medicine and see if the training courses offered by ATS are a good fit before committing to attending any of our in person acupuncture programs. For those who have completed an ATS training program, observing in the clinic will bring to life the seminar material and allow a better integration into practice. Costs for observers are $25 per hour:
- $100 for a 4 hour shift, or
- $200 for a full day of observation
Licensed practitioners who have completed both the Tangible Acupuncture for Internal Diseases and Tangible Acupuncture for External Injuries programs are eligible to earn a 600 hour clinical immersion program certificate. While herbal understanding is strongly encouraged, completion of ATS online herbal programs is not required. Participants begin by observing the treatments, then assisting the practitioners until their skill level is accessed. For those who demonstrate a clear proficiency in applying the treatment skills learned in ATS’ Tangible Acupuncture programs, participants may finish treatments following protocols given by the attending practitioner. Costs for participation in the program:
- $4,500 for a 300 hour certification program commitment. Hours can be completed at the discretion of the participant but must be completed within 36 months of registration. Payment is due in full prior to beginning clinical hours and is not refundable for any reason.
To apply for the immersion program, please send a resume with a letter of introduction by e-mail. Limited space is available Monday through Friday from 9-6pm. Before your first clinical shift, please review the information and code of conduct information.
